Just want to say as someone who has hated every anime movie (based on a series) ever this one was amazing. Reasons and highlights in the post below. Spoilers abound so don't say I didnt warn you.

The new pilot actually being awesome
Eva 02 going intentionally berserk when hiijacked by said new pilot
Shinji saving the Rei that actually has emotions (No joke, Holy Fuck)
Kawrou Showing up
Most of the animation
Asuka piloting unit 3 instead of Shinjis angry friend
Less angst then usual... but they may have just been time constraints
Asuka seemed less bitchy and had more personality

Weak Point
CG animation parts, the angels looked like shit quite often. A shame because the other animation was top notch.

Final Comments
All in all I was overwhelmingly surprised. This movie covered the best parts of the show and it made those parts even better. They even managed to surprise the hell out of old fans by having the first Rei actually live and not sticking us with the boring clone. The scene where shinji saves her was brilliantly done because most of the audience legitimately believed he would fail.

I'm thrilled about the third movie now because Shinji is going into the third impact an entirely different person then the first two times we've done it. Before he lost Asuka (a zombie in the show), Rei (replaced by a useless clone), and Kawrou (killed by shinji). So by the time third impact rolls around he wants the world to end. Now Asuka looks fine in the preview and hes got the legit Rei. Kawrou's role seems very different this time though. Its clear he's the last angel again, but he's lost the whole thing where he's shinji's last friend. He seems like a legit enemy now the whole way through. Still I'm excited by how he said "This time I'll make you happy Shinji." I really hope he's referring to the first series. With a plot device like third impact, multiple endings can be tied together very well if done properly. I guess Anno read my Higurashi/Eva crossover fic:
